Chinese and Indian Immigration to Australia
This comparative project examines Chinese and Indian immigration to Australia, focusing in particular on the history of Chinese and Indian cooperation in opposing the White Australia Policy.
Craig Smith is an Associate Professor in the University of Melbourne’s Asia Institute. He is a historian of modern East Asia and an avid translator. He was awarded an MA in Taiwan Literature from National Chung Cheng University in 2010 and a PhD in History from University of British Columbia in 2014. He is the author of Chinese Asianism (Harvard University Asia Center, 2021; Chinese translation with The Commercial Press, 2025) and the editor of Translating the Occupation (University of British Columbia Press, 2021) and Sinophone Australia (University of Sydney Press, 2026).
