Global Taiwan: Competition in South America and Southeast Asia
This project charts the competition between China and Taiwan for diplomatic allies, examining how aid and economic development efforts are deployed in South America and Southeast Asia.
Craig Smith is an Associate Professor in the University of Melbourne’s Asia Institute. He is a historian of modern East Asia and an avid translator. He was awarded an MA in Taiwan Literature from National Chung Cheng University in 2010 and a PhD in History from University of British Columbia in 2014. He is the author of Chinese Asianism (Harvard University Asia Center, 2021; Chinese translation with The Commercial Press, 2025) and the editor of Translating the Occupation (University of British Columbia Press, 2021) and Sinophone Australia (University of Sydney Press, 2026).
